Minister Says MoD Looking at Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Personnel Advised to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Cars.

An defense official has revealed that the MoD is actively examining the potential threats associated with Chinese-made cars, while staff have been instructed to avoid talking about classified information in any cars.

Safety Advice for Defence Personnel

In a recent appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about secret information while riding in China-made cars.

The minister explained that the MoD is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but emphasised that security is a concern in every contemporary cars.

We have a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any car, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a prudent and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.

When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all cars from China, Pollard replied: ‘That’s precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”

Wider Defence Context

This announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow China to disable public transport and bring disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.

The broader defence environment underscores the significance of strong protocols and caution in all areas of official activities, including vehicle use to discussions practices.
