The experimental drug, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning properties. Viewers are urged to message these profiles privately for supplier links, while also obtaining discount codes.

Active Commerce on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of participants share “before and after” photos, injection guides and claims of next-day UK delivery. Vendors market the drug there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.

This medication is an experimental injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug affects three gut hormones – GLP-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could assist patients lose up to 25% of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed online as the successor to Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Voice Worries

However, doctors and pharmacists have cautions that the distribution of what remains an unlicensed drug in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could lead to individuals administering products of unknown origin.

Some influencers try to circumvent the regulations by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but advertising and supply can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer laws, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or imprisonment.

Platform Reaction and Material Removal

Based on the social media company, the platform has taken down problematic content and banned associated keywords and query recommendations. The company stated it was dedicated to maintaining the platform secure and investing in enhancing compliance measures.

Investigations also found groups with up to nine thousand members marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which operates like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of members, populated with photos of slimming results, positive testimonials and step-by-step guides for preparing or injecting at residence.

After minutes of entering one group, a vendor shared contact information, where the majority of transactions occur. The vendor sent an guidebook and guaranteed shipping within two days. When questioned whether the product was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a alleged laboratory certificate. None asked about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.
